I have now been accepted as a staff member of InterVarsity. The position I have been offered will be starting new IVCF chapters at community colleges around Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and Detroit. I do not know what campus I will begin working at, but I should know within the next week or so.
My next big task is to start to raise support for my ministry position. Support raised ministries count on churches and other believers to financially support the call to reach "all nations" with the gospel of Jesus Christ. In so many words I will be a local missionary reaching students of different ethnic backgrounds with the gospel. God has called me to "go" to the campuses and build relationships with students and staff, to equip them to make disciples. The college campus is packed with different world views that can cause even the most commited Christian students to doubt and lose faith.
I want to be there for them to help encourage and guide them as they make the three biggest decisions of their lifetimes.
1. What do I believe about Jesus? This is a decision of eternal significance!
2. What career/vocation do I pursue? This is a matter of calling and purpose. We are the body of Christ and God has gifted each of us to use our gifts to serve the LORD.
3. Relationships? Will I stay single, get married or other? Gender and sexual identity are often questioned in college. God has a specific plan for each of us and not "everything under the sun" is beneficial or right in God's eyes. I desire to come along side these current and future leaders to help them understand God's plan.
I will also be partnering with area churches in this process. InterVarsity is a parachurch organization, which means it is a support for the local church, not an end in itself. I will go and make disciples, but I will need to plug them into a church home that suits their individual needs and backgrounds. This calls for cooperation and partnership from many denominations within Christianity. If this appeals to you and your church please let me know.
I am excited about this new venture in serving God's kingdom and hope that as I share the gospel, "And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved." Acts 2:47
